Mean Girls has a ‘fetch’ opening weekend at the box office
Following its release on January 12, Mean Girls is winning the box office competition with an estimated four-day opening of $31.5 million over the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. This projection is despite more than 50 theaters around the country closing due to severe weather.
Mean Girls is based on the 2018 Broadway musical which is based on the 2004 comedy. The new version, which stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron who was originally played by Lindsay Lohan, is about a girl who is entering the nerve-wracking world of regular school after being homeschooled her whole life. She joins the new school and befriends The Plastics, the “cool girl” squad played in this reimagining by Renee Rapp, Bebe Wood, and Avantika — who take over from Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried.
Mean Girls beats out other new releases like The Book of Clarence which is reportedly bombing. The black-led biblical satirical drama is headed for a four-day opening of about $3 million, which puts it outside of the top 10.
It also beats out Amazon MGM’s action movie The Beekeeper, led by Jason Statham, which is projected to make $19 million over the holiday weekend.
