The Barbie movie stole our hearts in 2023. With its huge success, it’s safe to say that, whether they liked it or not, everyone has at least talked about the Barbie movie at some point in the last year. But there’s so much more to the Barbie movie than what you may have seen on screen!

The Barbie movie, written and directed by Greta Gerwig, follows “stereotypical” Barbie as she leaves Barbieland, after a series of less-than-perfect events, and adventures out into the real world to fix what went wrong. Along the way, she learns that living in the human world isn’t as perfect as she once thought.
Here are 6 interesting facts about the Barbie movie.
1. Ken was written specifically for Ryan Gosling
“We wrote his name into the script and everything… and Gosling’s name was everywhere,” Gerwig told the New York Times. “And then when we handed them the script, the studio was like ‘Oh, it’s so wonderful that you know Ryan.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know Ryan. I’ve never met Ryan, I have no idea.’”
2. Margot Robbie insisted on a mandatory pink day on the Barbie set
Taking inspiration from Mean Girls, Margot Robbie had a day each week where everyone had to wear pink. If someone showed up without pink on, she would go around collecting fines, which were then donated to charity.
3. Barbie Land’s Airport is called BAX
There were many references to the real world throughout the Barbie movie, especially in Barbie Land. During a few scenes, you’ll see the Barbie airplanes and airport, but you may have missed that the airport is named BAX, which is an obvious play on LAX or Los Angeles International Airport.
4. Gloria’s Husband Is America Ferrera’s Real-Life Partner
Gloria’s husband has a small appearance in the movie, but we were excited to see that the actor who played him is none other than America Ferrera’s husband in real life! Ferrara’s husband plays the goofy but endearing dad and husband who is at home trying to learn Spanish via Duolingo.
5. Nods to the animated movies
If you look closely you’ll see objects like the Pegasus statue and a big sign of Barbie as a fairy during some of the beach scenes. Both of these are nods to the Barbie animated movies of the past that we grew up with!
6. The set of Barbie caused a pink paint shortage
Greta Gerwig said she wanted the set to maintain a “kid-ness” and almost wanted it to be too much. Well, as it turns out it almost was! The set of Barbie used so much pink paint that it actually caused a shortage of the vibrant color. The LA Times contacted Roscoe, who is renowned in the entertainment industry and is a specialist in supplying paint for film, and they said they gave them “everything they could”.
