Johnny Depp Makes Animated Comeback in “Johnny Puff: Secret Mission”
In an unexpected twist to his career trajectory, Johnny Depp is set to charm audiences once again, this time in animated form. The actor, who has been gradually rebuilding his career following highly publicized legal battles, is lending his voice to a new animated feature, “Johnny Puff: Secret Mission.”
The film, a spinoff of the streaming series “Puffins,” sees Depp voicing the titular character – a fedora-wearing puffin residing in an Arctic town. This puffin is tasked with taking on the nefarious Otto Von Walrus in what promises to be a whimsical arctic adventure.
In a surprising creative decision, Depp has taken his voice acting to new heights. “I thought it would be great to invent a language for the character,” the actor revealed in a recent featurette. “I thought the only move now is to mix my dialogue with the actual sound of a puffin.” The result? Expect to hear Johnny Puff uttering phrases like “Rama-lama-yama” in a unique blend of human speech and puffin calls.
“Johnny Puff: Secret Mission” is not Depp’s first foray into the world of these adorable seabirds. The movie is an offshoot of “Puffins,” a streaming series produced by Rome-based Iervolino Entertainment, which also featured Depp’s vocal talents when it premiered in 2020.
For fans eager to see Depp’s latest work, the movie is set for a limited theatrical release on July 12, opening in seven theaters across the United States, including Los Angeles. Those unable to catch it on the big screen need not worry – the film will be available on various streaming platforms including Fandango at Home, iNDEMAND, Dish Network, and DirecTV later in July.
