In a surprising turn of events at the domestic box office this weekend, the horror sequel "Terrifier 3" has carved its way to the top spot, while "Joker: Folie à Deux" experiences a historic decline.
Box Office Winner: Terrifier 3 Dominates
Cineverse and Icon Events’ “Terrifier 3” opened with an impressive estimated $18.2 million from 1,988 theaters. The latest installment in the horror franchise has clearly resonated with audiences, outperforming expectations and easily securing the number one position.
Joker 2’s Historic Fall
While “Terrifier 3” is killing it at the box office, “Joker: Folie à Deux” seems to be on the receiving end of a different kind of slaughter. Todd Phillips’ sequel is estimated to earn just north of $7 million from 4,102 theaters in its second weekend, marking a historic decline of 81 percent. This drop is not only the worst in history for a comic book movie but also ranks among the biggest falls for any film opening in more than 2,000 locations.
Other Notable Performances
- “The Wild Robot” secured the third spot, earning another $13.4 million from 3,854 cinemas.
- In a surprising twist, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” now available on premium VOD, managed to outperform “Joker 2,” pushing the latter to fourth place.
- The Pharrell Williams animated LEGO biopic “Piece by Piece” debuted at No. 5 with $3.8 million. This opening is considered disappointing given the movie’s $16 million budget, suggesting a challenging road ahead for the film to recoup its costs.
- Briarcliff’s Donald Trump biopic, “The Apprentice,” is looking at a modest debut of around $1.6 million from 1,740 locations.
The weekend also saw the release of several well-reviewed potential awards contenders, but their box office performances have been underwhelming:
- “Saturday Night,” a dramedy based on the long-running sketch comedy show SNL, debuted at No. 7 with $3.4 million. Despite being Certified Fresh with an 80% rating, the film failed to attract a significant audience in its opening weekend.
