Luca Guadagnino in Final Negotiations to Direct Bold New Adaptation of American Psycho for Lionsgate
Fans of American Psycho, get ready for another trip into the dark and twisted world of Patrick Bateman. Lionsgate has revealed exciting news: Luca Guadagnino, known for his visually stunning and unsettling films (Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria), is in final negotiations to direct a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ infamous 1991 novel. Set to be a fresh take on American Psycho, a story that already made waves with its 2000 film adaptation starring Christian Bale, directed by Mary Harron.
However, this isn’t a remake of the film that made Bateman a household name. Instead, it’s described as a “new interpretation” of Ellis’ novel. Screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (Contagion, The Report) is crafting the script, and the project is being produced by Frenesy Films. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.”
For those unfamiliar with the story, American Psycho focuses on Patrick Bateman, an investment banker in 1980s Manhattan, who leads a double life as a serial killer. The novel explores themes of materialism, identity, and morality, and its brutal violence paired with Bateman’s cold detachment has made it a cultural lightning rod.
While details of this new adaptation are still scarce, Guadagnino’s involvement has already sparked a lot of curiosity. Known for his ability to blend beauty with horror, he seems poised to bring a fresh, haunting vision to this classic story.
Stay tuned for more updates on what promises to be an intense and gripping new chapter in the American Psycho legacy.
